The Freelander 8 has been spotted testing on UAE roads as the revived brand prepares for its first international market launch in Abu Dhabi in September 2026. Two lightly camouflaged SUVs were photographed during hot-weather validation, matching Freelander’s earlier confirmation that Middle East test vehicles had arrived ahead of the regional introduction. Images published on 19 August show two Freelander 8 test cars with limited camouflage, leaving most of the boxy production body visible. One appeared not to carry the roof-mounted LiDAR unit seen on higher-specification Chinese cars, although its exact trim has not been confirmed.

The sighting adds two clear points for UAE and GCC readers:

• The regional test programme is active on public roads. Freelander had already confirmed that vehicles were in the Middle East for local testing, and the new images now show that work taking place in the UAE.
• Abu Dhabi remains the launch location. The company says its market debut will take place there in September, putting the UAE at the start of Freelander’s international expansion.

Gulf heat forms part of the final validation

Hot-weather testing is particularly relevant for an electrified SUV because battery cooling, air-conditioning and powertrain thermal management face heavy loads in Gulf summer conditions. It also gives engineers local data before the car reaches customers.

Buyers should keep two points in mind:

• UAE specifications may differ from China-market cars. Software, driver-assistance functions and equipment can vary by market, so Chinese specifications should not automatically be treated as final for the Emirates.
• A September launch does not confirm immediate deliveries. Freelander has announced the Abu Dhabi debut, but a firm UAE customer delivery date has not been confirmed in the sources reviewed.

Range-extender powertrain is clearer after China pre-sales

Freelander opened China pre-sales for the 8 on 14 August from 339,900 yuan. The brand later reported more than 10,000 pre-orders in 48 hours, although pre-orders should not be treated as completed retail deliveries.

Confirmed China-market technical highlights include:

• The range-extender system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive. Combined output is listed at 610 kW, or 818 hp, with 813 Nm and a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.6 seconds.
• A 60.3 kWh battery provides up to 310 km of electric-only range on the CLTC cycle. That is a laboratory rating and should not be read as guaranteed UAE real-world range.
• The platform uses an 800-volt electrical system. Chinese specifications quote a 20 to 80 per cent charging time of about 12 minutes when suitable high-power charging is available.

The Freelander 8 measures 5,118 mm long and 2,050 mm wide, with a 3,040 mm wheelbase. Chinese versions are offered with five- and six-seat layouts.

The Freelander name returns through a new JLR-Chery formula

This is not simply a new Land Rover Freelander. JLR and Chery announced in June 2024 that the Freelander name would be licensed to their Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture for a separate electrified portfolio built in China.

JLR said the reborn Freelander range would sit independently from both Chery’s existing portfolio and JLR’s modern luxury House of Brands. The partnership combines Chery’s vehicle technology and development capability with JLR’s brand and design input, while the UAE has been selected as the first international launch market.

UAE price, trims and deliveries are still unconfirmed

Despite the local sightings, several purchase-critical details remain open. The official launch communications reviewed here do not provide a UAE price, final local trim structure, warranty package or confirmed customer delivery date.

That leaves three important cautions for prospective buyers:

• China’s 339,900-yuan starting price is not an official UAE price. Local equipment, taxes, distribution and market positioning can change the final showroom figure.
• The 818 hp output and 310 km CLTC electric range apply to the Chinese range-extender specification. Freelander has not confirmed that every UAE version will use exactly the same setup.
• Local sales and aftersales details still matter. Dealer representation, service coverage and warranty terms will be important once the brand starts taking UAE customer orders.

Abu Dhabi now becomes Freelander’s Gulf proving ground

The UAE sightings show that the Freelander 8 is moving through regional validation before its September Abu Dhabi launch. With production under way and China pre-sales already open, attention now turns to final UAE specifications, pricing, dealer support and delivery timing.

For Gulf buyers, the key development is simple: Freelander’s first new SUV is already being tested locally, and the UAE is set to host the brand’s first international market debut.
